Tithing, Giving, and the Heart

A Quiet Tension Many Carry

There is a conversation that keeps surfacing—quietly in some places, loudly in others:

“I don’t give to the church anymore. The pastors are taking advantage.”

And if we’re honest, some of what people have seen has made them pause. Luxury lifestyles. Financial imbalance. Questions without answers.

But here is the deeper question:

Does someone else’s misuse release us from our responsibility?

What Scripture Actually Establishes

Leviticus 27:30 KJV
“And all the tithe… is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.”

The tithe does not begin with the church. It begins with God.

Malachi 3:10 KJV
“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse…”

This is not random.
This is order.

Giving was never designed to be:

  • Emotional

  • Occasional

  • Reaction-based

It was designed to be consistent and intentional.

But What About Leadership?

Scripture does not ignore accountability.

Hebrews 13:17 KJV
“…they watch for your souls, as they that must give account…”

James 3:1 KJV
“…we shall receive the greater condemnation.”

God sees.
God knows.
God will judge rightly.

But notice—these verses are not instructions for us to withdraw obedience. They are reminders that leadership is accountable to God.

So What Is My Responsibility?

2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV
“…not grudgingly… for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

Your giving is not a response to people. It is a response to God.

Misuse does not cancel obedience. It calls for discernment—not withdrawal.

Where Should the Tithe Go?

Scripture shows that the tithe supported those who labored in God’s work:

1 Corinthians 9:14 KJV
“…they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.”

Today, this means:

  • Where you are consistently taught the Word

  • Where you are growing spiritually

  • Where there is accountability and structure

If there is no integrity, the answer is not to stop giving. The answer is to be planted in better ground.

Matthew 7:16 KJV
“Ye shall know them by their fruits…”

The Part Many Miss: Giving Beyond the Tithe

Tithing is not the full picture.

Proverbs 19:17 KJV
“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord…”

This is where:

  • The homeless

  • The struggling

  • The overlooked

are cared for.

Tithe is obedience. Offering is compassion. The Heart of the Matter

There was a woman who gave almost nothing—yet gave more than everyone.

Mark 12:43–44 KJV
“…she of her want did cast in all that she had…”

Jesus did not measure her amount. He measured her surrender.

When Increase Makes It Harder

It’s easy to say:

  • “I’ll give $100 out of $1,000.”

But when it becomes:

  • “I’ll give $10,000 out of $100,000…”

Something shifts.

Not in the math—but in the heart.

Luke 16:10 KJV
“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much…”

Increase reveals:

  • What we trust

  • What we cling to

  • What we believe sustains us

The Balance Scripture Teaches

The tithe teaches discipline.
The widow teaches devotion.
God is looking for both.

A Simple Way to Live This Out

  • Tithe (10%) → where you are spiritually fed

  • Offerings → where there is need

  • Heart posture → willing, not forced

Final Reflection

It is not about:

  • The amount

  • The optics

  • The opinions

It is about this:

Do you trust God more than what you’re holding?

“It’s not harder to give more—it’s harder to let go of what you trust more.”

Prayer

Lord, align my heart with Your truth. Teach me to give with discipline, trust, and sincerity. Remove fear, pride, and hesitation, and help me walk in obedience.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
